ISHS Awards

• Honorary Membership of the ISHS will be presented by the Council to a person who is a member of the ISHS in recognition of his/her exceptional service to the Society. A certificate will be given to the recipients of this ISHS Award. Honorary Members are appointed for life by the General Assembly. Honorary membership comes with complimentary ISHS Individual Membership for life.
• The ISHS Fellow Award will be presented to a person who is a member of ISHS, in recognition of his/her outstanding contribution to horticultural science worldwide. A precious metal pin and a certificate will be given to the recipients of this award. Awarded by the Council; the total number of living ISHS Fellows shall not exceed 1% of the total membership, averaged over a period of previous 5 years.
• The Horticulture Innovation Award is the highest recognition granted by ISHS Council to a person or institution for an exceptional contribution to horticulture innovation. This award is especially addressed to those with innovative ideas to create new products and services that are seen as important landmarks in the progress of horticulture at international level. A trophy and a certificate will be given to the recipients of this award.
• An ISHS Medal can be presented to outgoing Chairpersons of Divisions and Commissions, or be handed out at the end of ISHS Symposia to Conveners. The ISHS Board can also award the ISHS Medal to other persons that have provided meritorous services to the Society. The Awards Committee can send recommendations for the ISHS Medal to the ISHS Board. The decision to award an ISHS Medal will rest with the Board. The ISHS Medal will be accompanied by a certificate.
• Miklos Faust International Travel Award for Young Pomologists. This Award honors Dr. Miklos Faust's significant contributions to the science and practice of fruit crops horticulture and to foster scientific exchange and collaboration within the world community of fruit crops researchers. Miklos Faust received a PhD degree in Pomology from Cornell University. He devoted his professional career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service to studies on fruit tree physiology that resulted in significant and lasting contributions to modern fruit science. A native Hungarian and a distinguished scholar, Miklos was keenly aware of the importance of international science exchange and cooperation for the advancement of modern fruit production, protection and genetic improvement.

More than one of the above awards can be presented to the same individual person.

The ISHS Awards Committee

The ISHS Awards Committee (AC) is a standing committee that evaluates and recommends to the Council the nominations for Honorary Members, ISHS Fellows and Horticulture Innovation Awards. The committee is composed of 6 voting members plus the Chairperson. The President of the ISHS, or nominated Board member, Chairs the Committee. Decisions are taken by majority of all voting members. A recommendation for an award must receive 5 favourable votes. AC voting members are appointed by the Council for a 4-year term and can be reappointed; the AC decides about its internal organization and functioning.

Nominations for Honorary Members, ISHS Fellows and Horticulture Innovation Awards must be received by the ISHS Executive Director at least 3 months prior to a Council Meeting. Five (5) statements of support must be provided giving the reasons why a nominee is considered worthy of the honor. These statements must come from members in no less than three different countries/regions. Nominations are forwarded to the AC by the Executive Director for consideration. AC Recommendations for awards are submitted by the AC Chair to the Council. AC recommendations must be balloted either by electronic voting (one vote per country/region as for other Council matters) prior to a Council meeting or by a secret ballot at a Council meeting. Two thirds of Council votes present at the meeting or electronically voting must be in favor of a nominee for the award to be granted.

The names of Fellow and Honorary members will forever be included in the membership directory - even after deceased - regardless of the payment of ISHS membership dues.

Nominating someone for an ISHS Award

Any ISHS member willing to nominate an individual for the ISHS Honorary Membership or ISHS Fellow Award should prepare a comprehensive nomination file consisting of:

1. an extensive nomination letter
2. a detailed CV of the nominee

This file should be e-mailed to the ISHS for the attention of the Executive Director, together with at least five (5) written and signed statements of support, giving the reasons why a nominee is considered worthy of the honor.
These statements must come from members in no less than three different countries/regions.

Miklos Faust International Travel Award for Young Pomologists

The American Society for Horticultural Science and the International Society for Horticultural Science has established the Miklos Faust International Travel Award for Young Pomologists.

This Award honors Dr. Miklos Faust's significant contributions to the science and practice of fruit crops horticulture and to foster science exchange and collaboration within the world community of fruit crops researchers.

Miklos Faust received a PhD in Pomology from Cornell University. He devoted his professional career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to research in fruit tree physiology that resulted in significant and lasting contributions to modern fruit science. A native Hungarian and a distinguished scholar, Dr. Faust was keenly aware of the importance of international science exchange and cooperation for the advancement of modern fruit production, protection and genetic improvement.

The Award was made possible because of a $30,000 gift from Maria A. Faust and subsequent individual gifts from members of ASHS, ISHS, Mrs. Faust, and corporate donors. This fund will be perpetually invested and the income from these investments will be used to fund this Award.

The Award will be in the form of financial support to a young (less than 40-year-old) scientist who is actively involved in fruit science research, and holds or is pursuing a doctoral degree, to travel to attend the quadrennial International Horticultural Congress (IHC) to present his/her original research to an international audience. An award will be made for travel to the Annual Conference of the ASHS occurring midway between each Congress. The intention is that each award will be large enough to cover most of the expenses related to attending the above-mentioned Congress or Conference. It is also intended that the fund will be managed in such a way that the Award can be presented biennially for an indefinite period of time.

ASHS will manage this fund on behalf of a Faust Award Board of Directors. Each of the seven directors is appointed by the President of the American Society for Horticultural Science in consultation with the President of the International Society for Horticultural Science. Each Director must be a member of the American Society for Horticultural Science and the International Society for Horticultural Science. Scientists, growers, corporations, other organizations, and individuals interested in horticulture worldwide are encouraged to consider donating to Miklos Faust Award. Your donations will promote international cooperation in fruit crops research and education and will foster ties and better understanding within the world scientific community.

Requirements

• The Miklos Faust International Travel Award for Young Pomologists will be awarded in even numbered years to support travel to the quadrennial International Horticultural Congress (2014, 2018, etc.).
• The purpose of the Award is to promote international cooperation in fruit crops research and education. This will be achieved by supporting the travel and international conference attendance of early to mid-career scientists who have completed or are actively pursuing their doctoral degree. They should be judged to be strong ambassadors for international cooperation.
• The award is intended to: (a) contribute to the training of young scientist; (b) promote dissemination of knowledge; (c) foster ties and better understanding within the world scientific community; and (d) promote interest and research collaboration in fruit research and production and related sciences world wide.
• To the extent possible, Faust Award winners will use this travel opportunity to visit universities or research centers in the country where the Congress or Conference is held.
• Applications must convey evidence of high originality and strong commitment to research in fruit science. Applications will be judged by a panel of three senior scientists selected from the Faust Award Board of Directors.
