ETYMOLOGY: Greek pteron “a wing,” and pepon, peponos “ripe, mild,” Latin pepo, peponis “a species of large melon or pumpkin.”

BASIONYM: Sicydium sect. Pteropepon Cogn. Flora Brasiliensis 6(4): 112. 1878.
